Campus Alerted About Sexual Assault That Took Place Near Crawford Building

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University administrators alerted the campus early Friday that a female student had been sexually assaulted in the early hours of the morning.

Acting President Debra Boyd said in a campuswide e-mail that a non-student male was arrested by the Winthrop Campus Police for sexually assaulting a female student in the Margaret Nance parking lot around 3 a.m. The student received support from the university’s victims assistance coordinator.

Here is the full text of Boyd’s message to the campus community:

"Members of the Winthrop Community:

Because the well-being of our Winthrop community is of utmost importance, I want to share with you that at approximately 3 a.m. a non-student male was arrested by Campus Police for sexually assaulting a female student in the Margaret Nance parking lot. Please know that our student is receiving support from the university’s Victims Assistance Coordinator.

While the investigation continues, I stress that the suspect is under arrest and that the campus community is not at risk as a result of this disturbing incident."
