ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – For Mary Kate Bell Brearley Glasser ’46, a Winthrop University education is more than simply a framed degree and a lifetime of memories – it’s also a family tradition.

Glasser established the Brearley-Rogers Endowed Scholarship to honor her family’s connection to Winthrop as well as provide scholarship support to current students. This $25,000 endowment will assist Winthrop students who are South Carolina residents majoring in education. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time during the 2015-16 academic year.

The Columbia, South Carolina, resident earned her B.S. in business education at Winthrop – and her degree signaled the continuation of a long, proud family tradition of receiving a Winthrop University education. Glasser’s mother-in-law, Evelyn Montgomery Brearley, Class of 1916, was a Winthrop graduate, while her aunt, Daisy Rogers Montgomery, graduated in 1954. Glasser’s daughter, Margaret Rogers Brearley Mitchum ’75, also graduated from Winthrop, earning a B.S. in early childhood education.

This scholarship also honors Glasser’s mother, Ola Rogers Bell, who taught her the value of a college education, and her aunt, Margaret Rogers, who made a Winthrop degree a reality for Glasser after she lost her parents.

Glasser, who was South Carolina’s 2008 Mother of the Year, explained that she created the Brearley-Rogers Endowed Scholarship to honor her family’s connections to Winthrop and help future students create their own family tradition of Winthrop experiences.

“Establishing this scholarship is a way to honor the educational foundation Winthrop has given me and my family and help future students create their own legacies,” said Glasser.
