ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Winthrop University’s Board of Trustees has announced the search committee that will take the lead in the next phase of the process to identify candidates for the eleventh president.

The members of the committee are:

Kathy Bigham, chair
John Bird, co-chair
Karl Folkens
Tim Hopkins
Glenn McCall
Janet Smalley
Sue Smith-Rex
Scott Talley

“I would like to thank the members of the Board of Trustees who have agreed to give of their time and talents to serve on the search committee,” said committee chair Kathy Bigham. “There’s no more important duty than selecting our next president, and the search committee possesses the experience and perspective needed in this initial phase of the search to help us identify a strong pool of candidates.”

During the first phase of the search, consultant Bill Funk of R. William Funk & Associates met with faculty, staff, alumni, and students as well as community and business leaders to help him identify the qualities important for Winthrop’s next president to possess.

“Bill Funk was very well received by the groups he met with and he impressed them with his experience and commitment to helping us find someone who will be the right fit for Winthrop,” said Bigham.

In the next phase, the search committee will work with Funk to review the initial list of candidates he puts together. The committee will then narrow that group down to those it invites to be interviewed. Of that group, three to five finalists will be invited to Winthrop to meet with the campus community and take part in interviews with representatives of university constituencies who will have an opportunity to confer with the Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees anticipates selecting the president next spring.

“Having been at Winthrop for 21 years, I deeply appreciate the many contributions of everyone who works at the university. And I never cease to be amazed by what our students accomplish here at Winthrop and after they graduate,” said committee co-chair John Bird, who is the Margaret M. Bryant Professor for the Department of English. “In my capacity as co-chair of the search committee I feel a particular responsibility to provide a voice for all who live, learn and work at Winthrop.”
