Winthrop Will Light it Up Pink in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Winthrop University will “light it up pink” this week in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, the focus of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority’s national philanthropy and week-long fundraiser series.

The exterior lights of the main university campus on Oakland Avenue will have a pink gel placed over them, beginning tonight through Oct. 10. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign by the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. to promote education and prevention.

The sorority’s main fundraising events include:

• Tuesday, Oct. 7, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Cotton Candy for Cancer. Snack on some delicious cotton candy for a $1 donation.
DiGiorgio Campus Center lobby

• Wednesday, Oct. 8, 8-10 p.m.
Kick Away Cancer kickball tournament. There will also be a bake sale at the tournament.
Recreational fields

More events will follow throughout the week. Additionally, Zeta Tau Alpha will have a dedication banner hanging in the DiGiorgio Campus Center asking, “Who do you wear pink for?” People are encouraged to fill out a pink ribbon for someone they know who has fought cancer, is fighting cancer or has passed away from cancer. The names will be placed on the banner.

Several organizations on campus are joining in the fight against breast cancer with activities including:

• Tuesday, Oct. 7, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

‘Fight Like a Girl’ bake sale. All baked goods will be pink, with all funds going to philanthropy.
DiGiorgio Campus Center lobby

• Sunday, Oct. 12, 7 a.m.
Out Run Breast Cancer 5K. Runners will make a donation of $15 before following a 5K run.
Winthrop Lake

• Thursday, Oct. 16, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The Social Work Club will collect donations in exchange for tickets to an upcoming play, “A Journey in Courage,” about American history. (The play itself will be Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. in the Richardson Ballroom.)

• Wednesday, Oct. 22, 8 p.m.
Families and friends affected by breast cancer will be honored.
