ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA— “Why is it you always wear black?”

“I’m in mourning for my life. I’m unhappy.”

Thus begins Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” considered by critics as one of the greatest plays of the modern era. Winthrop University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present its version of the famous play beginning Oct. 8 in the Johnson Theatre.

“The Seagull” is a riveting exploration of the everyday longing—longing for love, fame and success— that marks a family’s days at they gather at a country estate and face fears of failure.

The action begins at the country estate of Sorin, played by Roderick Freitas (Fountain Inn, South Carolina). Sorin’s sister, the famous actress Arkadina (Emily Cupit, Hilton Head), her son Konstantin (Shiva Patel, Rock Hill) and her lover Trigorin (J.T. Rider, Charleston) arrive for a relaxing vacation. Konstantin is eager to show off his play to the visitors, especially because it stars next-door neighbor Nina (Riley Ketcham, Florence), Konstantin’s crush.

But romantic and career rivalries, the pursuit of fame and erupting passions slowly begin to change everyone’s lives in ways both welcome and unimaginable.

Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance Laura Dougherty
steps into the director’s chair for the drama, which also features a stage and design crew headed up by students.
