Money Magazine Names Winthrop One of its Best Colleges for Value

Quick Facts

Winthrop is in the top 500 out of more than 1,500 institutions considered for the list.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University recently was named to Money Magazine’s “Best Colleges” in terms of value.

To determine the rankings, the magazine reviewed the nation’s roughly 1,500 four-year colleges and universities to discover which ones provide the best value for the money. The magazine screened out those with a below-average graduation rate and then ranked the 665 that remained on 18 factors in three categories: educational quality, affordability and alumni earnings. Winthrop tied for 487th place out of the 665 colleges and universities that made the final cut. In all, six South Carolina public universities were listed: The Citadel (114), Clemson University (138), University of South Carolina (261), College of Charleston (536) and South Carolina State University (569).

"It's satisfying to receive this third-party endorsement as a Money Magazine Best College as we work to keep the cost of college within reach for families. The inclusion reinforces the fact that Winthrop offers students a quality, increasingly customized education, one that prepares them for success in their chosen fields and inspires them to be lifelong learners and active citizens,” said Acting President Debra Boyd.

Over the past decade, Winthrop has consistently received third-party endorsements for its value, academic quality and sustainability efforts. U.S. News & World Report has named Winthrop one of the South's top 10 public universities that convey bachelor's and master's degrees in its "America's Best Colleges" edition for the last 23 years. Barron's Best Buys has included Winthrop in its rankings, Washington Monthly has named Winthrop a "best bang for the buck," and Princeton Review regularly lists the university among best Southeastern colleges.
