ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University maintained its eighth place ranking as one of the South's top 10 public universities that convey bachelor's and master's degrees in the 2015 U.S. News & World Report's edition of "America's Best Colleges."

This marks the 23rd year that the magazine has included Winthrop in its list of top tier institutions in the South. The Rock Hill-based institution placed 25th among Southern public and private universities.

Winthrop made gains in areas that directly impact students, including:

•The freshman retention rate increased from 70 to 72 percent (based on a four-year average of cohorts)
•The student/faculty ratio improved from 15:1 to 14:1
•Student graduation rates continue to improve. Last year 51 percent were predicted to graduate, while 53 percent did, while this year 51 percent were predicted and 56 percent graduated.

The rankings from the 2015 edition of "America's Best Colleges" were released earlier today on Sept. 9.

The U.S. News college rankings group schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and are frequently relied upon by students and parents considering higher education opportunities. U.S. News surveys colleges and universities each year and ranks nearly 1,400 of them in different categories.

Winthrop Acting President Debra Boyd said that the U.S. News ranking is further proof that Winthrop offers a quality, increasingly customized education for students.

"We don't pursue rankings," said Boyd.  "Instead, Winthrop faculty and staff work hard to make sure our students receive the education and support that prepares them to pursue success in their chosen fields and inspires them to be lifelong learners and active citizens."

Over the past decade, Winthrop has consistently received third-party endorsements for its value, academic quality and sustainability efforts. Barron's Best Buys has included Winthrop in its rankings, Washington Monthly has named Winthrop a "best bang for the buck," and Princeton Review regularly lists the university among best Southeastern colleges.
