ROCK HILL, S.C. — Becky Zaslow is a happy, normal 10-year-old with an admittedly average life until she is diagnosed with one of the world’s worst enemies: leukemia. However, an imaginary troupe of magical zebras from the Serengeti Desert appear to save the day.

The Winthrop University Department of Theatre and Dance’s production “Zink: The Myth, the Legend, the Zebra” opens Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. in the Johnson Studio Theatre.

After her diagnosis, sixth-grader Becky (Sydney Bertsch, a psychology major from Charleston, S.C.) has her entire life turned upside down. Previously, she worried about her annoying sibling and how her rival Ashley will probably win the talent show in Becky’s absence. Now, her life revolves around needles, hospitals and blood counts.

But while waiting in the hospital, Becky is visited by a trio of zebras—Zip, Zap and Ice Z (played by Amber Grayson of Easley, S.C.; Rodrick Freitas of Jupiter, Fla.; and Madia Medico of Summerville, S.C., all theatre majors)—who comfort her through song, dance and the story of the mystical Zink, a polka-dotted zebra with the biggest heart and the most courage. Becky finds courage in Zink’s story as she faces her own battle with cancer.

“Zink” is entirely student-directed and –designed, with Abby Olson, a theatre major from Rock Hill, stepping into the director role.

Show times for “Zink” are 8 p.m. Oct. 23-26 with a matinee performance Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 with a Winthrop ID on Oct. 23 and 24 and $10 to the general public. Performances Friday-Sunday are $8 with a Winthrop ID and $15 to the general public. It is an approved cultural event.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office. Box office hours are 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday throughout the week the production is open and an hour before curtain.
