ROCK HILL, S.C. - Family members attending Winthrop University’s Family Day can participate in Olympic games, a picnic, geocaching and other activities on Saturday, Oct. 5.

More than 500 family members are expected to visit their students during this seventh annual event, according to Carrie Whiteside, director for new student and parent programs.

Participants can start their day with a tour of the Winthrop Galleries, a theatre presentation, a geocache treasure hunt or a behind-the-scenes tour of the Winthrop campus.

The day continues with the Family Picnic, held on the Byrnes Auditorium lawn, featuring a performance by the Symphonic Band. President Jayne Marie (Jamie) Comstock will welcome the crowd at 11:45 a.m. from the steps of Byrnes.

Beginning at noon, the band will play compositions reminiscent of community and professional band concerts of the early 1900s, including works by such popular composers as Leonard Bernstein, John Williams and John Phillip Sousa, as well as by faculty member Mark Lewis and his stirring rendition of "Casey at the Bat."

The afternoon activities include the annual Family Olympics, the RSA Block Party with inflatable games, the annual Disc Golf Tournament behind the Winthrop Coliseum and tours of the university’s treasured artifacts from the Archives. Evening activities include dueling pianists, a musical and a movie, shown under the stars at the Winthrop Amphitheatre.
