ROCK HILL, S.C. — The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has awarded Winthrop University $12,500 in two grants which focus on education recycling and recycling infrastructure on campus.

In his application to the department, Sustainability Coordinator Chris Johnson ’99 noted that while Winthrop is committed to sustainability and being a positive example through sustainable practices, a major goal is to increase the university’s recycling rates by 20-25 percent or more during the next year.

He said the funds are certainly a huge incentive to boost recycling efforts on campus.

“While recycling is often considered because of environmental concerns, there is also a connection to the social and economic dimensions of sustainability,” he said.

One of the grants—in the amount of $11,250—is focused on providing more consistent recycling collection containers, precise signage for residence halls and other buildings on campus, and placing recycling and trash receptacles together to better address concerns. The other grant--$1,250—will go toward conferences and workshops that will increase knowledge on recycling programs and innovations in the field.
