Shannon Quinn '04, artistic director for ReVision dance company, believes that dance can be "a unifying experience."

In mid-January, Quinn and her group traveled to South Africa to collaborate with Usuthu Arts Production to perform "Propelling Voice" at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria. The contemporary dance piece, co-directed by Ben Levine, explored the themes of individuality, support, obstacles, expression, risk-taking and community, with each theme represented by a specially designed dodecahedron.

Quinn said that the collaborative efforts between ReVision and Usuthu mirrored the theme of community in "Propelling Voice."

"The whole piece is about building community, and our work with Usuthu Arts Production mirrored that," said Quinn. "Because of our different styles, we pushed their dancers in a new way and they pushed us to take risks too."

The Maryland native has spent her career creating pieces that strike a balance between artistic excellence and accessibility, particular for people with intellectual or physical disabilities. She has taught extensively in the D.C. metropolitan area in numerous public schools as well as Knock on Wood Tap Studio, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, Dance Place and City Dance. She also teaches beginning and intermediate modern dance classes at the Catholic University of America in D.C.

Quinn noted that she discovered her passion for dance education at Winthrop, where she earned a B.A. in dance with K-12 teacher certification. Helping students learn to express themselves through dance, she said, is her favorite part of teaching.

"Dance allows for personal expression and personal growth, and I love seeing the transformations in the students I teach," said Quinn.
