When Lisa Sickman ’10 started researching online language programs, she couldn’t find one that taught the basics for travelers. So she decided to create her own – and The Tandem Traveler was born.

“I think everyone who wants to travel should go and not let language barriers scare them off,” said Sickman. She and her boyfriend, Dan Sundberg, hatched the idea for The Tandem Traveler in preparation for a trip to Italy. Both had backgrounds in behavior analysis, and they used their training to design the curriculum for a program that teaches travelers the language basics they need to explore a foreign country. They’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the creation of an app for travelers.

“Our program only teaches the essentials that the traveler is going to use – the language they need to have the best adventures,” said Sickman. The Sacramento, California, resident has devoted herself full time to establishing The Tandem Traveler, which she and Sundberg want to expand to include French, Spanish, German and more languages in the future. The pair hopes to have the app ready for the summer 2017 travel season.

If not for Winthrop, Sickman’s life and career could have taken a very different turn. “My passion for travel started at Winthrop,” she explained. During her studies at Winthrop, she spent a summer abroad in South Africa, and she hasn’t stopped exploring the world since. She’s visited Italy, France, Amsterdam, England, Scotland, Canada and Mexico, and she’s traversed the Americas. Sickman wants to keep adding stamps to her passport with future trips to Iceland, Jordan and southeast Asia.

Sickman said she’s grateful that Winthrop – where she majored in psychology and minored in nutrition – helped her discover a career she loves.

“I look forward to being able to research travel, go abroad and share our product with the world.”
