Jane Lawton LaRoche
Winthrop Board of Trustees member Jane LaRoche ’70 believes that encouraging faculty members makes a university stronger. To support Winthrop faculty and the university she loves, she established the Jane LaRoche Endowed Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction.

The award recognizes and rewards a faculty member who demonstrates dedication to teaching as well as exemplary instruction in a graduate-level course. LaRoche, whose board term expires in 2022, said she is “pro-faculty” because she thinks faculty members are the backbone of a strong learning institution.

“When we take care of our faculty, we make Winthrop stronger,” said LaRoche, adding that she thinks of the university’s faculty as a family. “It’s a joy to see faculty members receive the award and feel honored by it.”

The emergency room physician earned her B.S. in physical education and her B.A. in Spanish at Winthrop. LaRoche attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, earning her M.D. in 1974. She has worked in private practice and served as a medical section chief for the C.M. Tucker Jr. Human Resources Center in Columbia, South Carolina. She is board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics and emergency medicine. LaRoche also has served as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

LaRoche has stayed active with her alma mater, serving as a member of the Loyalty Fund Committee and an Executive Board member of the Kershaw County Alumni Chapter. As a Winthrop student, she played varsity basketball, was a four-year cheerleader and participated in a wide variety of groups, including the Senior Order Honorary Society, Who’s Who among Colleges and Universities, Spanish Honor Club and Winthrop Recreation Association, among others.

The Camden, South Carolina native returns to campus regularly to attend games and special events such as Commencement and the annual Faculty/Staff Awards Ceremony. LaRoche noted that she remains supportive of her alma mater’s faculty because “great faculty draws in great students, which in turn makes a great school."
