Mary Le Sesne ’10, co-founder of The Blush Label, knows that sometimes achieving a dream requires a major leap of faith.

Le Sesne left her prosperous corporate career to establish The Blush Label with her sister, Christie Le Sesne. What began as a way to create lively, bright home fabrics quickly grew into a full line of home décor and entertaining accessories inspired by Mary and Christie’s childhood trips to Puerto Rico, their father’s home country.

“The colors on the island are incredibly welcoming and vibrant, and that’s what we wanted The Blush Label to embody,” said Mary, adding that many of the unique designs are derived from Christie’s artwork. Mary handles business development while Christie manages the creative/design aspect of Blush Label’s product line.

Recently the company’s striking designs have attracted considerable media attention – Blush Label products have been named “hot summer buys” by Lillian Vasquez, host and reporter for WNBC’s New York LIVE. These colorful creations also have been featured in Garden & Gun, TODAY.com and ELLE U.K. magazine. In September, Blush Label products will be available in more than 50 stores worldwide, including Panama, the Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands.

Though owning a business has its challenges, Le Sesne said that the end result is more than worth all the time and effort.

“Every day there is a challenge we face, but every day there also is a success that we celebrate,” she said. “Owning a business is not easy – and it requires a lot of hard work and patience – but it feels great to know something you’ve built from scratch is growing into a successful business.”

Le Sesne earned her B.A. in mass communication at Winthrop, where she first learned the ins and outs of working with the media. A public speaking course proved particularly useful – Le Sesne called it a “game-changer” because the class taught her fundamentals that are invaluable in the world of pitching products.

“All of the Winthrop faculty, staff and student ambassadors really took the time to get to know me and learn more about what I wanted from a college experience,” said Le Sesne. “Choosing Winthrop was an excellent decision for me.”
