Theatre

Bachelor of Arts

Students majoring in theatre at Winthrop University will experience a program that encourages a breadth of knowledge that includes production work as well as performance. All theatre majors have opportunities to assume artistic leadership roles during their academic careers in the department. Advanced students take on lead acting roles, design duties, stage management positions, technical direction responsibilities, box office management, direction, and more. Very few undergraduate programs offer these many opportunities for students to perform, design, direct, choreograph, stage manage, and run productions.

Hear From Our Students & Faculty

            Matt Ferrell
            Assistant Professor of Theatre

“Doing theatre is about learning all aspects of theatre. That’s what you do here at Winthrop. My part time job for ten years was working as a dresser at Radio City Music Hall. Some years I would make close to six figures being a dresser part time. You have those skills coming out of here. You get to see if you like costume design or lighting design, whereas in some programs you’re siloed into a particular track. Students here learn time management and get to work in some great facilities."

“Winthrop is where I began to develop both my theatrical aesthetic and a deep appreciation for the arts as a result having the privilege to perform in amazing productions, reading the works of phenomenal playwrights (such as that of Amiri Baraka, Bertolt Brecht, August Wilson etc.), meeting wonderful people from all walks of life and from being taught by a wonderful faculty of professors, some of which still influence me to this day. It is where I began to discover the pulse of my creativity, where I was given all the tools to help shape said creativity into magic, and where I discovered how to use my work and my artistic platform as a powerful weapon for change.

Winthrop theatre graduates are prepared to pursue careers with resident theatre companies, national touring groups, theme parks, local arts councils, and schools. Theatre alumni also pursue graduate degrees at prestigious institutions throughout the U.S.
