Political Science

Bachelor of Arts

Do you want to know how the world really works? The Department of Political Science at Winthrop University devotes itself to the study of people, power, and politics in the state, the law, and society. Come join our award-winning faculty and students as we explore politics in South Carolina, the United States, and the world and learn how to truly make a difference and pursue a career that has an impact on our world! This program is not like any other in the state, the region, or even the nation. The Model United Nations Program, the Center for Public Opinion and Policy Research (CPOPR) and the Winthrop Poll, and the John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy not only allow for the development of real-world marketable skills and unique experiential learning opportunities, but also make the Winthrop University Department of Political Science stand out as a political science powerhouse.

Curriculum & Learning Opportunities

Winthrop University generally and the Department of Political Science specifically offer a private liberal arts education on a public university dime. Students are taught by faculty experts with terminal degrees in their field, not by teaching assistants or graduate students which happens at other larger institutions. The student faculty ratio and class sizes are small. Political Science faculty engage with students directly both inside and outside the classroom through mentoring undergraduate research, directing study and research abroad courses, sponsoring cultural events, directing state, regional, and collegiate Model United Nations conference opportunities on and off campus, and more! Winthrop PLSC students get the kind of attention and build the kind of relationships with their faculty that just doesn’t happen in other larger universities in the state. Transfer students tell us this directly! Winthrop students know their faculty CARE.

Winthrop Political Science students are incredibly engaged both inside and outside the classroom. Political Science students participate with faculty on undergraduate research both at home and abroad. Students can engage in a faculty-led study abroad program in Kenya, which provides first-hand field research opportunities. They lead student organizations, including Council of Student Leaders, College Democrats, College Republicans, and the Socialist Student Union, they serve as Student Body President and Student Representative to the Board of Trustees, and they participate in state, regional, and national conferences, including collegiate Model United Nations conference opportunities on and off campus. Winthrop Political Science Students are also required to engage in Experiential Learning, which can include an internship, a political advocacy or research course, or Model UN!

Kalin (McKenzie) Bennett
Winthrop Political Science Class of 2021
NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Award Winner, Phd Program, University of Notre Dame

“The Winthrop Political Science Department provided me with the essential professional, academic, and social resources in order to prepare me to attend graduate school. I am forever grateful for the stellar political science professors, clubs, and programs that have sharpened my knowledge in understanding political phenomena. I am implementing and executing those same skills throughout my time at Notre Dame. The department is like no other."

Beyond Graduation

Winthrop Alum Summersby Okey

Summersby Okey
Political Science, Class of 2013

“My MA degree at Winthrop in Political and Civic Engagement, coupled with my undergraduate degree in Political Science at Winthrop, have really helped me to see the value in Civic Engagement and being involved in one’s community! I learned how to be an engaged and effective citizen and to appreciate and understand other’s views. Those are skills that I will use for the rest of my life, and that will help me no matter what career I pursue. I think the Political Science professors at Winthrop are among some of the best, probably in the world. They go out of their way to make sure that every student is engaged and has their needs met. They seek out personal relationships with the students and are extremely well-informed in their subject areas. Every one of them is so passionate about what they teach, and that makes it fun to learn from them"
