Design Programs

Bachelor of Design

The Department of Design offers the professional Bachelor of Design degree in Design with concentrations in Interior Design,  Graphic Design,  Illustration, and Experience Design.

 

Minor in Illustration

The minor in Illustration consists of 18 hours. Three required classes provide students with fundamental skills in
illustration.

  • DESF 120 (3) Design Drawing
  • DESF 154 (3) Design and Color
  • VCOM 220 
  • Three elective classes, chosen from
    • VCOM 121 (3) Design Drawing II: Structure and Form 
    • VCOM 323 (3) Illustration: The Costumed Figure
    • VCOM 325 (3) Illustration: Portraiture
    • VCOM 420 (3) Illustration: Creating Graphic Novels
    • VCOM 423 (3) Illustration: Children's Book Illustration
    • VCOM 425 (3) Illustration: Persuasion and Propaganda
    • VCOM 427 (3) Illustration: Narrative and Editorial 

VCOM electives allow each student to choose a trajectory aligned with their personal illustration interests.
Note: Minors in these concentrations may be required to have a laptop.

Minor in Visual Design Studies

The minor in Visual Design Studies consists of 18 hours of DESF and VCOM courses, 6 hours of which must be numbered above 299. The courses required for the minor must include

  •  DESF 120 (3) Design Drawing 
  •  DESF 150 (3) Design Studio Skills
  •  VCOM 151 (3) Design Fundamentals
     
    Plus 9 additional hours to be chosen from:
  • DESF-any
  • VCOM 100-299
  • VCOM 354 (3) Basic Design Applications
  • VCOM 374 (3) History of Graphic Design and Illustration
  • VCOM 388 (3) Graphic Arts Production Practicum

A maximum of 9 hours of the courses described above can be used to counted as both "major" and "minor" requirements; the remaining 9 hours cannot be shared, must not be described as being part of the student's major, and must consist of VCOM coursework beyond, and unique in application to, the minor alone.
