Winthrop offers the Bachelor of Science in middle level education for students who wish to be certified to teach middle grades (5-8) in South Carolina. Students select one concentration area and complete 28 – 30 semester hours from among English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Our goal is to prepare teacher candidates with teaching and learning strategies as diverse, varied, and lively as the middle school students themselves.
When you think back to your time in middle school, was there a teacher or coach that believed in you and helped you get through those difficult years? Would you like to be the one that makes a difference in the life of a teenager? The Middle Level Education program trains pre-service teachers to work in teams and connect with young adolescents during this crucial developmental stage. Beginning in the freshman year, our middle level education teacher candidates participate in field experiences in public school settings. We believe in hands-on engaging instruction that models best practices of research related to the concepts and characteristics of successful middle schools.
At Winthrop, middle level teacher candidates are placed in educational settings beginning in the freshman year. During the first semester of the senior year, candidates are placed in an internship setting with various teaching roles in middle school classrooms. The second semester of senior year consists of no less than 60 full days of student teaching under the guidance of an experienced middle level teacher in the Rock Hill area. Middle Level majors have the opportunity during the sophomore year to complete a semester abroad. Middle level education majors are welcome to become members of the student chapter of the South Carolina Education Association and/or the Palmetto State Teachers Association. Membership in Kappa Delta Pi, an international honorary organization for education majors, is also available for those who achieve high academic honors. The program has its own chapter of the Collegiate Middle Level Association which is active in community service and supports members in attending the SCAMLE state conference each year.
