Human Development and Family Studies

Bachelor of Science

The B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies is a nationally recognized program by the National Council on Family Relations. Additionally, program completers are eligible to receive the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) national credential. This degree program opens the door to a wide variety of career opportunities. Students choose to specialize in the following: child and adolescent studies, child and family services, or a minor in gerontology. 


Curriculum & Learning Opportunities

If you Care about improving family well-being and supporting communities, like to lead and teach, enjoy critical thinking and problem solving, and value working with diverse populations. You could Work in community-based social services; early childhood education; family intervention; health care and wellness including working with an aging population; faith-based organizations; government and public policy; international education and development; business, consumer, and family resource services; and research, writing and communication.

The HDFS internship gives students the chance to participate in a supervised professional experience. Students are required to complete a two-internship course sequence with 150 contact hours in each course for a total of 300 contact hours to meet the HDFS major requirement. Each internship course has a capstone project. The internship courses give students opportunities to link their classroom content knowledge to the real world, to gain professional experience in HDFS, and to facilitate a network of professional relationships. Student Organizations: HDFS Student Ambassador Program WUSCFR (Winthrop University Student Council on Family Relations) - This organization is a professional organization in which HDFS students are highly engaged in professional and service activities that enhance their educational experience. NCFR (National Council on Family Relations) NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) 

    The HDFS program is designed to prepare graduates for career opportunities in community-based social services; early childhood education; family intervention; health care and wellness including working with an aging population; faith-based organizations; government and public policy; international education and development; business, consumer, and family resource services; and research, writing and communication. Individuals that care about improving family well-being and supporting communities, like to lead and teach, enjoy critical thinking and problem solving, and value working with diverse populations are ideal candidates to pursue this degree. Students in this Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) approved program take a diversity of courses leading to provisional certification. Additionally students complete 300 hours of internship experience. Full certification as a CFLE requires an additional 3,200 hours of experience typically
