Events/Programming & Information Sessions

Each semester the International Center provides information sessions on different topics pertaining to F1 and J1 student visas. We also sponsor different events across campus.

Casual Fridays

The Casual Friday program is supported by Winthrop's University College through the Global Learning Initiative and the International Center. This program is designed to get both U.S. and international students to come together and discuss a topic of similar interest. Casual Fridays are held several times each semester on a Friday afternoon in Dinkins Auditorium. For more information on Casual Friday's contact us.

Global Friends Conversation Partner Program

Moving to a new country without many friends or family can be a daunting task. But Winthrop’s University College, the home of the Global Learning Initiative, the International Center and the Department of World Languages and Cultures makes the transition easier for the university’s nearly 200 international students with the Global Friends Conversation Partner Program.

The program began specifically to enhance engagement among cultures, a goal of the Global Learning Initiative (GLI).

This Program is a collaboration between the Global Learning Initiative and the campus departments that affords international students a chance to both meet a new American friend and practice intercultural communication skills.

More than 90 students participated in the program’s first semester and the program continues to grow as more students hear about it. After registering for the program, the students met on a weekly basis.

Here are some samples of what students say about the Program:

•“I learned a lot of Chinese! I got to learn about Chinese culture, and I made a friend.”

•“For international students, it was really helpful in order to meet students and start a conversation easily. Moreover, we discover new tradition, culture and so on.”

•“I liked learning about a whole different culture that was not the same as mine, and overall making a new friend and sharing interesting things about ourselves.”
