Sustainability

Winthrop University is committed to sustainability and to serving as a positive example through sustainable practices. The Inn at Winthrop proudly offers our guests:

  • Bedding and towels with no chemical by-products
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Ecologically friendly cleaning products
  • Environmentally sensitive amenities in recyclable packaging
  • High-efficiency plumbing fixtures
  • In-room recycling
  • Paper products made from recycled materials
  • Use of low VOC products, including paint

We ask you to help us conserve energy, labor, and water by:

  • Checking HVAC units to ensure they are running only when necessary  
  • Reducing electricity by turning off lights and unplugging your electronic chargers when you are not in your suite
  • Reusing your linens when possible
  • Utilizing the in-room recycling bins for paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, and newspaper
  • Following Winthrop's No Idling Policy 

Winthrop is a signatory of the Talloires Declaration and is an institutional member of the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), the Carolinas Recycling Association (CRA), and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
