Chapter of the Month

Please congratulate the members of the Xi Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for being selected as Chapter of the Month for October 2017! ( Chapter of the Month is selected at the monthly chapter presidents’ meeting)

Thank you for choosing us as Chapter of the month! As a chapter, we wanted to hit the ground running and really show the campus great events that were geared toward their needs. Welcoming Winthrop and the new freshmen class we had handbills printed at convocation to pass out to students. The purpose was to ensure students were aware of upcoming programs so they can plan accordingly to attend. Due to passing out handbills so early, attendance at every event have exceeded expectation.

Our first program just two weeks into the semester was titled "PG-13: Rated Girls Only." This event was very fun and interactive where we had girls wear pajamas and talk about the importance of loving and knowing yourself in relationships. We had a guest speaker from the Palmetto's Women Center, the speaker became emotional while giving examples of being in a healthy & unhealthy relationship.

On September 17th, we held a closed event named "Freshmen Tea", this is event is closed for the purpose of informing minority freshmen about resources and tips to use during their time at Winthrop. We also had a speaker for this event, who discussed knowing your why and purpose for being on campus. Although this is an annual event for our chapter, we added a creative twist which included tea and paint.

Being that service is a such a huge part of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated we had three recent community services in the past month. Due to the recent tragedies of Hurricane Irma, the chapter teamed up with the local Salvation Army and collected three boxes of toiletries. Next, in collaboration with our alumnae chapter, Rock Hill Alumnae we participated in Rolling in Rock Hill and repainted a house for a family in dire need. Last weekend we did a highway clean up, and invited members of the campus to join, in total we collected six thirty gallon bags of trash.

On September 26th in collaboration with Delta Zeta Sorority, we presented the campus with a free cultural event named "Dancing with the Delta's". With over 300 attendees, everyone had fun working out with a Zumba routine with culturally infused music.

What’s Next?

Friday the 1913th, is a Halloween fundraiser where students can come dress up and enjoy a dance party. Tickets can be purchased at eventbrite.com/e/friday-the-1913th-halloween-party-tickets-38660805510

All about relationships, the chapter is visiting local high school students to talk about loving yourself, and knowing yourself in relationships. We are also encouraging them to apply for college and consider the opportunities college can present to you.

We will wrap up the month with a program titled, "Tales: If the tables were turned" this event will focus on lyrics from current classic hip hop songs. For this event we want to show a depiction of police brutality, racial issues, and gender roles.

Again, we are proud to be chosen as the first chapter for  Chapter of the month for the 2017-2018 school year, please contact xibetadst@winthrop.edu for more information and stay updated on social media by following us xi_betadst.
