Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs

Please congratulate the men of the Xi Phi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for being selected as Chapter of the Month for October. (Chapter of the Month is selected at the monthly chapter president meeting.)

The brothers of the elite Xi Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated have had a very busy fall 2016, highlighted by a string of successful events. We extend a warm thank you to the campus community for supporting all our endeavors and hope we continue to see large numbers at all our events. The month of October consisted of 3 events which sought to educate the campus and foster a sense of community. The three events were:

Know Better Do Better
Brother Lawrence Ross, the author of the New York Times best seller “The Divine Nine: The history of African American Fraternities and Sororities”, came to campus to speak in his new lecture series. The series, entitled “Know Better, Do Better, discusses the roles of racism in fraternal organizations and its effects on race relations on college campuses. The brothers of Xi Phi not only introduced Ross, but collaborated in bringing him to campus.

Chill and Grill
To thank the campus for supporting our events, Xi Phi threw a campus wide cook out, inviting everyone to enjoy food and each other’s company. We also collected charitable donations for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Over 300 people came out to support the event. This was a collaboration with the Multicultural Student Council and the Council of Student Leaders.

Phright Night Zumba
We held a Halloween themed Zumba Night in the west center featuring glow sticks, Halloween decorations, black lights and a smoke machine. Four thirty minute sections were conducted by the most popular Zumba instructors at Winthrop and healthy snacks were provided to all participants. This was a collaboration with Winthrop Recreational Services.

In the month of November, we will be having several events. We will be participating in the NPHC Step Show on November 12. Throughout the whole month of November we will be collecting for a clothing drive at boxes around campus. We also adopted a highway within the Rock Hill Community. Lastly, our Founders Week will be from November 28 until December 4th. This year’s theme is “A Seat at the Golden Throne”. Stay tuned for more updates.
