It is the mission of the Department of Music at Winthrop University to offer nationally accredited music programs that provide students with opportunities to explore their intellectual and creative potentials through liberal arts, music education, and music performance degrees to prepare them for a life of professional, academic, and community service.

The Department of Music at Winthrop University features the only comprehensive, fully accredited music program in our area conveniently located in the Upstate Region of South Carolina in the Charlotte Metropolitan Area.

   

Travel support is available for graduate student presentations or performances.

        In addition to meeting Winthrop University general admission requirements for all graduate students, the applicant for admission to a graduate program in music performance should:

        • Hold a baccalaureate degree with a major in performance, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution

        • Have an overall undergraduate grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

        • Pass an applied entrance audition. Students who do not pass the applied entrance audition will study at the undergraduate level. Graduate-level study must be attained by the end of the first semester.

        The diagnostic placement examinations should be taken prior to the semester of initial enrollment in the graduate program.

        All applicants must submit:

        • The online Graduate School application with the non-refundable application fee

        • Official transcript(s) from all institutions attended for undergraduate and graduate coursework. Note: Transcripts must be sent directly to Winthrop's Graduate School office from the issuing institution(s)

        • Two letters of recommendation

        • An applied entrance audition
