Master of Social Work

A cohort admissions process is used for MSW admissions. Review of applications begins February 1. Review ends April 30 for summer admission and June 15 for fall admission.

  The cohorts are as follows:

  • The 60 credit hour Full-Time Traditional Program is admitted for August enrollment;
  • The 60 credit hour Weekend Traditional Program cohort is admitted for August enrollment
  • The 39 credit hour Full-Time Advanced Standing cohort is admitted for May enrollment
  • The 39 credit hour Weekend Advanced Standing program is admitted for August enrollment.

Application requirements include:

1. Submit a Winthrop University Graduate School application including the following:
 
Three professional recommendations. You will be asked to provide names and email addresses of three individuals who can complete a recommendation form on your behalf. These three people will then receive an e-mail asking them to complete the recommendation form.
• A professional resume.
• A personal narrative statement (2-3 pages) addressing the following: 1) Your reason for pursuing the MSW degree; 2)Your career goals upon completing the degree; and 3) Any previous paid or volunteer experience you may have had in the human services arena. This statement must be developed solely by the applicant with no outside assistance.

2. Hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university (Advanced Standing applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited college or university).

3. Submit official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended. Transcripts must be sent directly to Winthrop’s Graduate School office from issuing institution(s).

4. Have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the Advanced Standing Programs. For the Full-time Program or Weekend Program, a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required on the last 60 credit hours.

5. Submit an official test score for either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Test scores will be considered within the context of the entire application.

Applicants with an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or above or those who hold graduate degrees from an accredited regional institution may qualify for a GRE/MAT waiver. Beginning with applicants wishing to start in January 2019 or later, the GRE and MAT requirement may be waived for applicants who have either completed their undergraduate degrees with an overall GPA of 3.5 or above or those who hold graduate degrees from a regionally accredited institution.
