Inauguration of President Comstock

Save the date for the Inauguration Ceremony of Winthrop's 10th president, Jayne Marie (Jamie) Comstock, on March 28, 2014.  A visionary and inspirational leader, Dr. Comstock has charted a bold course for Winthrop's future. The Inauguration theme of Onward. Upward. Winthrop Ever Stand. captures Dr. Comstock's vision for Winthrop  - the vision of an institution on the rise, firmly grounded in excellence yet aspiring toward ever-greater achievement. Dr. Comstock's Inauguration signals a new era in Winthrop University's institutional history. Events are planned for March 24-30. More details will follow.

Withdrawing from Classes at Winthrop

Friday, October 18 is the last day to withdraw from a full-semester fall 2013 course. Students may withdraw online.  However, if the student has a registration hold for any reason, they must complete a course withdrawal form  and return it to the Office of Records and Registration, 126 Tillman, by 5 p.m., October 18.

Students are expected to follow the courses of study selected at the beginning of the semester or summer term.  There may be instances, however, when the student wishes to withdraw from a course. The decision to withdraw from a course is the student's alone, but consultation with the adviser or Student Services Office and with the instructor is encouraged.

If the withdrawal is completed during the first 60% of the instructional days of a particular course, the grade of N is assigned, indicating that no credit is awarded. An N does not affect the GPA.  Withdrawal from a course may not occur after 60% of the instructional days of the course have been completed, unless documented extenuating circumstances should warrant withdrawal from the course with the assignment of an N grade. Extenuating circumstances include extended illness or death in the family. The online catalog offers more details.

Students cannot withdraw from all courses online.  Students who find it necessary to discontinue their college work during the fall or spring semester should officially withdraw from the University. The withdrawal process begins in to the Office of Records and Registration, 126 Tillman Hall.

Students should note that classes which meet only part of the semester have different withdrawal deadlines and should consult the registration calendar for these dates.

Also, if the student is enrolled in a class for which he or she has previous Winthrop credit, they may only get credit for the class once. Exceptions to this include some music and special topics courses.  For federal financial aid purposes, students are only allowed one re-take of a previously passed course. Students should contact the Financial Aid office 803/323-2189 to determine if the course they are retaking will affect their financial aid eligibility.

For any questions regarding course withdrawals, please contact the Office of Records and Registration, 803/323-2194 or by e-mail.

Employers and Graduate School Representatives on Campus

On Tuesday, October 8, the Center for Career Development and Internships (CDI) will host the fall Career and Graduate School Fair on Winthrop's campus. This event is a perfect opportunity for students and alumni to connect with recruiters for internships, part-time jobs and full-time employment as well as discuss graduate school programs with admissions representatives from various universities. Professional dress is required to attend this event, make sure your student has something appropriate to wear hanging in their residence hall or apartment closet! We encourage students to schedule an appointment prior to our career fairs to work on updating their resume and perfecting their 60 second introduction. For a list of companies and graduate schools attending this year, see the CDI's website. In the spring semester, CDI hosts three additional fairs for students and alumni. Encourage your student to attend each of these events. They are open to all majors and years of study.

Fall 2013 Career & Graduate School Fair: Tuesday, October 8

Grad Finale

The Grad Finale will be October 1 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.  inside the Winthrop Bookstore.  This will be a one-stop shop for graduating seniors to check with various offices on campus to make sure they are on track for December graduation.  All December graduates will receive an exclusive gift from the Alumni Association, have a chance to find out about benefits they will receive as new alumni and discover other opportunities available to graduates. December graduates will be able to get everything they need for commencement all in one place! Students can purchase graduation regalia, and order their class ring that day.  We have a new class ring to offer students this year, which will be available for you to see at the Grad Finale.
