Happy New Year from the Office of New Student and Parent Programs! We hope that you and your student have enjoyed your break and your time together.

We are looking forward to another great semester with many exciting events and activities, including the first Garnet and Gold Gala on Friday, January 11. Encourage your student to take advantage of all the opportunities Winthrop has to offer and to bookmark the University Events Calendar. This is a great way to keep up with university events and it includes approved cultural events as well.

Residence Halls Open on January 6

Just a reminder for continuing students that Residence Halls will be open for move-in beginning Sunday, January 6 at 8 a.m. Students will not be able to access their Residence Hall rooms before this date. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the Department of Residence Life at 803/323-2223.

Dining Services

Happy New Year! We hope you had a refreshing winter break and that you are energized for the Spring semester! We have an exciting year coming up and we are looking forward to having your student dine with us more in 2013 with some great new offerings!

It's a new semester and time for students to choose their Meal Plans! If your student is a resident and wants to make any changes to his or her meal plan, he or she need to go to the Residence Life Office in DiGiorgio Campus Center, Room 237. Students will have until the first Friday after classes begin (January 11) to make any changes to their plans.

Commuter Students can now purchase a meal plan with an incentive! Purchase any commuter plan and receive a coupon book for the entire semester — that's one coupon a week of great savings! It's easy, simple and saves money while dining on campus. We have six plans commuters may choose from — two being created specifically for commuters. To purchase, your student can log onto their Wingspan account and choose the meal plan of their choice — this will be charged to their student account. If you would like to pay it immediately, you can go to the Cashiers office and pay — otherwise it will be placed on your next bill from the university. Winthrop Giving Challenge Raises More Than $100K to Support Scholarships

An outpouring of gifts from Winthrop alumni and supporters has made December a season to be jolly, indeed — especially for the university's students.

The Winthrop Chimney Challenge, a holiday-themed giving challenge, has raised more than $100,000 to support the Winthrop Fund, an unrestricted fund that provides student scholarships. The holiday-themed challenge, which began at midnight Tuesday, Dec. 11, and ended at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 13, garnered 390 gifts — well beyond the challenge goal of 300.

The challenge, issued by an anonymous couple, was straightforward: Secure 300 gifts to the Winthrop Fund in three days. The potential reward? $50,000 for the Winthrop Fund.

Positive response from donors mid-challenge pushed the gift total to 314 — more than $40,000 — by 1 p.m. Dec. 13. Gifts continued coming in until just before midnight Dec. 13, eventually totaling more than $52,000 in additional gifts to the Winthrop Fund.

A grand total for the Chimney Challenge will not be available until early next week when all gifts postmarked during the challenge have been received. All funds raised will support student scholarships in the 2012-13 academic year.

Kim Keel, vice president for university development and alumni relations at Winthrop, noted that the overwhelming positive response to the challenge illustrates the university's motto, "Live. Learn. Lead."

"Through the Chimney Challenge, Winthrop University alums, friends, faculty, and staff have demonstrated their active role in the success of our current students," said Keel. "Seeing them engage via technology to achieve this unique goal is evidence of ˜Live. Learn. Lead.' at its finest."

Teleia Tollison White, assistant vice president for annual giving and operations for Winthrop's Office of Development, added that the challenge has been "a testament to the amazing Winthrop community."

"We appreciate everyone responding to this challenge. We were amazed and delighted at how quickly we were able to reach 300 gifts," said White.

Presidential Search Committee Narrows List to 12 Candidates

The search for Winthrop University's 10th president has been narrowed down to 12 candidates, according to Kathy Hudson Bigham '73, presidential search committee chairwoman and vice president of Winthrop's Board of Trustees.

The presidential search committee members will meet the first round of candidates in person from Sunday-Tuesday in Charlotte. The 10-member search committee, which is composed of one professor, one student and eight board members, chose the candidates from a large applicant pool.

Greenwood-Asher, the search consultant chosen for helping select the president, made at least 600 calls to people who were interested in or recommended for the job or know those interested in applying.

After the meetings, three finalists will be recommended to the Board of Trustees. The new president will take over this summer.
