Eagle Family Connection

October 2017

Hello Parents and Family Members!

October is a very exciting time at Winthrop! With the fall season underway, we have included many essential articles in this edition of the Eagle Family Connection. The Academic Success Center has provided an article regarding interim grades to help keep you up-to-date about academic resources for students. The Department of Residence Life outlines important information regarding residence halls closing for Fall Break in their article, and a few other articles are available. Don't forget to like the Office of New Student and Family Programs Facebook page for updates and information about what is going on in our office and at Winthrop.

Don't forget to sign up for Family Day, which is on Saturday, October 7. If you are interested in attending Family Day, call our office and we will get you set up. We hope to see you there!  As always, the Office of New Student and Family Programs is here to keep you connected and informed. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Fall Break

Residence Halls close for Fall Break on Friday, October 13 at 6 p.m. and reopen Tuesday, October 17 at 2 p.m. Students will not be allowed to enter their residence hall room after the 6 p.m. closing.

As students depart, residence hall staff will check every room for general health and safety. These inspections are plain view searches. Staff will be checking for prohibited items including fire hazards (extension cords, candles, etc.) and will also check the general cleanliness of the room and suite bathrooms. As a reminder, the residence hall contract provides for periodic health and safety inspections.

Special arrangements for students to stay over the break can be made for those students who are student teachers, participating in an internship, athletes whose names have been submitted by the Athletic Department, students with Rock Hill area jobs, and students who live more than 300 miles from the Winthrop campus. Please keep in mind, dining service options are extremely limited over Fall Break.

A Break Stay form, which is distributed to all students, includes instructions on how to submit a request to stay online through Eaglesnest. Students who are staying for the Fall Break must make their own arrangements to stay in Lee Wicker, Phelps, Richardson, Roddey or The Courtyard, if not currently assigned. All other halls will be closed.

All approved students will receive a printable permission form that they must carry throughout the break. Students are not allowed to have room guests during the break. Students should contact their Residential Learning Coordinator (RLC) or Residence Life at 803/323-2223 with further questions.

Interim Grades

Winthrop is committed to supporting student success, and one way to do that is to communicate with students in an intentional way about their class progress. In a few weeks, most students will be receiving interim grades (also known as 'mid-term' grades). These grades are a guideline to assist students and advisors in assessing where the student is at that particular point in the semester. Students at-risk can be referred to the Academic Success Center while high-performing students can be steered towards the Honors Program.

Students can access their interim grades for classes that meet the whole semester through the online portal, Wingspan, beginning Monday, October 9. Interim grades do not appear on a transcript (unofficial or official), and students should keep in mind that their grade is only reflective of the amount of graded work done in the class up to that point. Most often, there is plenty of time to bring up a low grade. If not, students have time to consult with the instructor, advisor, or other support unit about whether to withdraw from the class.

Students with questions about their interim grades should confer directly with their instructors.

A Message from Financial Aid

Just a reminder, that the 2018-2019 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available beginning October 1st. We encourage you (and your student) to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. Winthrop University has a February 1st priority deadline to submit the FAFSA in order to be considered for certain need-based programs. However, the sooner the FAFSA is completed, the better, especially as it relates to funding that may be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Do not hesitate to contact the Office of Financial Aid with any questions

The DiGiorgio Student Union (DSU)

The DiGiorgio Student Union programming board here on campus just wrapped up an awesome Welcome Week in August and is now in the swing of things for the fall semester’s lineup of events. This semester we will have a large range of events that cater to different audiences. This is to ensure that we touch each segment of campus and have a broader focus so that we cater to all Winthrop students. In the month of October we have a slew of events that each have a different focus. The events are listed below. Please make sure you come out and enjoy. Make sure you buy an All-Access pass so you can get into all of the events for the rest of the year. All-Access passes are $20 for students and $25 for non-students. They can be charged to your Winthrop account or be paid with cash or online. Visit our website for more information on each event.

Parent Portal on Wingspan

The Parent Portal allows Winthrop students the ability to grant access to their information to parents, guardians, or another third party. Depending upon the level of access granted by the student, authorized users may view addresses, grades, unofficial transcripts, class schedules, and emergency contacts.

Only students can grant access or remove access at any time. This does NOT take the place of your signed Permission to Release Records form. That form is still needed to allow parents/guardians to talk with instructors or to obtain copies of academic records.

More information and instructions on how to set up a proxy are available online. There is also a quick-link to this page through the Office of Records and Registration website.
