As an integral part of her master's study, Poindexter Smith conducted her scholarly research on interpreting black American drama and creating audience appreciation through understanding. She volunteered at the first ever National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C., under the direction of founder Larry Leon Hamlin.

She studied mime and the actor's process with Tanya Belov and she studied scriptwriting with Ron Stacker Thompson, both of UNC School of the Arts.

A former high school English and theatre teacher, Poindexter Smith went on to pursue a career in corporate communications, including integrated marketing, journalism, public relations, digital media, and broadcasting. An award-winning writer and filmmaker, she has worked with Fortune 100 companies, including Humana, Lincoln Financial, and United and non-profits, including the National Institutes of Health and the American College of Physicians.

With a keen interest in executive presence, she is a certified master coach, who works with entrepreneurs and sales teams to help them develop the skills actors use to cultivate presence, including confidence, connection, and commitment.

She's a former board member and communications executive for the Winston-Salem Youth Arts Institute.
