Why Winthrop?

After attending UNC Pembroke and studying abroad in Germany, I knew that I wanted to continue my education in the field of photography.  I wanted to stay on the east coast for my under graduate study, so then began my search. I was impressed with Winthrop's admissions policies, my program of study, and the University's commitment to program accreditation. After visiting the campus, and at that time College of Visual and Performing Arts, I knew I had found a new home to study and hone my skills as a photographer.

Why photography at Winthrop?

The Winthrop fine arts program, which includes photography as one of it's key avenues of study, is designed to build a strong foundation in all of the arts.  This foundation in drawing, 2D design and 3D design translate into a stronger understanding of what it takes to make good photography.  Photography at Winthrop covers in depth both the technical aspects of photography along with artistic skills and knowledge to back it up.

What are you doing?

During my senior year of study, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with the Children from A Place For Hope, teaching art and volunteering, which resulted in two large photo based murals. After these were made public, I was commissioned to design the 12' X 16' photo mural that is installed on the mezzanine level of Carroll Hall. I have been busy with the development of the Dustin Shores Photography and Design Studio. There have been so many projects coming in that I have been working nonstop. My current projects include:

  • Photography for the upcoming Pearl calendar as his celebrity has taken off with the documentary "A Man Named Pearl"
  • Photography of Tega Cay and surrounding area for the newly constructed First National Bank of the South installation
  • Website and branding design for regional clients

During the summer, I have assisted photographer Phil Moody with his one man show and artist in residence, located at 701 Whaley in Columbia SC. I like to take things one day at a time, but the wheels are always turning. This fall I will be working on various projects in the tri-state area. I had first planned to continue with graduate study on the west coast, with the thought of instructing in the future. I have put that process on hold temporarily, since my calendar is filled with exciting new projects and adventures. Please visit me on my website at
