Strategic Decision Making and Critical Thinking in the Workplace


Participants in this course will learn the foundational concepts and strategies of an internationally-recognized, comprehensive system of critical thinking. Participants will also practice strategies for analyzing and assessing data and claims, thinking strategically, solving complex problems, developing self-awareness and empathic listening skills, and fostering critical thinking character traits.

Course Objectives

  • Recognize the importance of critical thinking in the workplace
  • Apply foundational elements of critical analysis in a variety of professional contexts
  • Assess data, claims, and information for accuracy, relevance, and significance
  • Develop metacognitive awareness and adopt a growth mindset

Target Audience

This workshop is designed for individuals who want to learn how to apply effective and practical critical thinking strategies in professional contexts.

Dates and Time (6 Contact hours)

June: Saturday 6/23rd, 9am to 4pm (6 hours of instruction and 1 hour for lunch)
          Thursday 6/28, 9am to 4pm (6 hours of instruction and 1 hour for lunch)
July: Friday 7/13,  9am to 4pm (6 hours of instruction and 1 hour for lunch)

Instructor Bio

Amanda HinerDr. Amanda Hiner, Associate Professor of English at Winthrop University, serves as the Coordinator for the Critical Reading, Thinking, and Writing Program at Winthrop University.  Under her leadership, Winthrop’s critical thinking program achieved international recognition as one of only eight academic institutions formally affiliated with the Foundation for Critical Thinking in Berkeley, California. Dr. Hiner has served as a sought-after consultant in critical thinking applications and strategies for diverse clients, including Duke Energy, AMEC Foster Wheeler Engineering, Sharon Towers, Texas Wesleyan University, York Preparatory Academy, and Charlotte Catholic High School.
