David H. Vawter has been at Winthrop University, Richard W. Riley College of Education since 1998 after graduating from the University of Virginia. Prior to his studies at UVA he was a teacher at West Mecklenburg High School for nine years in the Social Studies department. He was also the head varsity coach for men's and women's soccer team. He moved from the state of Oregon in 1983 to take the position of Director of Communication and Alumni Relations for the national fraternal organization, Pi Kappa Phi. At Winthrop University Dr. Vawter also advises the student chapter of Pi Kappa Phi and co-advises the student chapter of the Palmetto State Teachers Association. He is also the coach/advisor for the Winthrop Huddle of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Dr. Vawter has taught courses in educational foundations, technology, and educational psychology. He teaches the secondary classroom management classes for both the undergraduate and graduate programs. He instructs both the undergraduate and graduate Social Studies methods class as well as supervises students who are in the field. He also teaches the introduction to Winthrop course for freshman known as ACAD 101. Since 1995, Dr. Vawter has consulted throughout the United States and Canada helping schools and teachers adopt and adapt to longer class times in block schedules. He also works with teachers and schools systems with training in innovative instructional strategies and Differentiated Instruction. Outside of Winthrop, Dave Vawter teaches adult Bible studies and is on the drama team for his church and coaches soccer for a middle school. He is married to Gail, who is a national board certified teacher at Springfield Middle school. They have a daughter, Bethany, at Clemson and a son, Matt, at Fort Mill High School.
