College & Career Readiness Counselor’s Role in Mitigating School Violence
Dr. Allison Paolini is a graduate of the University of South Florida where she obtained her Ph.D. in Counselor Education Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to obtaining her Doctorate, Dr. Paolini worked as a School Counselor at as a Title 1 elementary school in Tampa, Florida. As a school counselor, Dr. Paolini implemented Character Education, Anti-Bullying and Peer Mediation programs, worked individually and in small groups with at risk students as well as consulted with teachers and administrators. Additionally, Dr. Paolini served as the Chair of the Child Study and Student Teacher Assistance Teams to determine the academic and social emotional supports needed for students facing academic and behavioral challenges. Further, as a leader and advocate, Dr. Paolini worked effortlessly to promote and enhance parental involvement by facilitating various workshops and meetings in the community surrounding the school.

Upon completing her Doctorate, Dr. Paolini worked as an Assistant Professor at Kean University and taught Research Methods, Group Process, Counseling Skills, Introduction to Family Counseling, and Career Counseling. Dr. Paolini served on several Department, College, and University wide committees, including acting as Chair of the Graduate College Committee co-chairing the University Curriculum Committee, and served as the faculty advisor for Chi Sigma Iota, Kappa Upsilon Nu, the National Counseling Honor Society chapter.

Dr. Paolini is thrilled to be a new member of the Winthrop University Community. She is an Assistant Professor of Counseling and Development and is also serving as the Field Placement and School Counseling Coordinators. Dr. Paolini is teaching Diagnosis and Treatment, Internship, Foundations and Ethics of School Counseling, Group Counseling, and School Program Planning, Consultation and Supervision. Her areas of research interest include the school counselor’s role in mitigating school violence, impact of substance usage on academic performance, college and career readiness, social emotional learning, and best counseling practices for reducing bullying. Dr. Paolini conducts numerous presentations and has submitted several publications addressing school counseling best practices. Dr. Paolini is passionate about teaching, inspiring, and enlightening her students through experiential activities and strives to foster an application based learning environment.
