Education Studies Minor


Program Coordinator: Dr. Scot Rademaker

Students declaring the Education Studies minor will be assigned to Dr. Scot Rademaker for advising, and students will continue to work with their content program coordinator already assigned for advising in the major.

Program Purpose:

Undergraduate students interesting in pursuing the MAT Accelerated option upon completion of their bachelor’s degree must declare the Educational Studies minor as soon as possible.

Program Admissions:

The Ed Studies minor requires students to apply for admission to teacher education. Ed Studies minors will apply to Teacher Education during the semester they take EDCO 201/202. Admissions requirements include:


  • At least a 2.75 GPA 
  • Passing score on the Praxis Core or an appropriate SAT or ACT score. 

The Graduate School Application for MAT is due by February 15th for a June start. Admission requirements include:

  • Praxis Subject Area Exam Scores must be at an acceptable level and available at Winthrop before February 15th. 

The following MAT Accelerated admission requirements are in place:

  • Summer 2018 MAT Accelerated: Admission requirements include EDUC 101, EDUC200, and EDUC 220.
  • Summer 2019 MAT Accelerated: Admission requirements include the Educational Studies Minor.


Program Courses:

Required courses are listed below (16 credit-hour minimum). Information regarding required courses, the sequence of offerings, and important program miles are contained in the following table. 

  • EDUC 101 (1 credit)
  • EDUC 200 (3 credits)
  • EDCO 201/202 (4 credits)
  • EDUC 220 (2 credits)
  • Discipline-Specific Methods Course (3 credits)
  • READ 345 or 346 (3 credits)
  • Electives (if needed)

Students who want to add the Middle Level to Secondary Certification must complete the following courses. Students may be able to take one or both of these at the graduate level as an elective in the MAT Accelerated Program:

  • MLED 300 (fall only) 
  • MLED 310 (spring only) requires admission to Teacher Education Program
