Athletic Training

About Athletic Training

Sophomore and upperclass students interested in pursuing professional education in athletic training may apply for admission into the Winthrop University Athletic Training Program (WU-ATP) and earn a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training.  The WU-ATP is designed to provide the athletic training student with the didactic and clinical experiences necessary to become a certified athletic trainer.

Freshmen interested in pursuing professional education in athletic training should select a major in Exercise Science with an Athletic Training Concentration (EXSC-AT).  Students selecting the EXSC-AT may apply for admission into a Master of Science in Athletic Training degree program during the junior year.

The Winthrop University Athletic Training Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The program has been placed on probation as of February 1, 2019, by the CAATE, 6850 Austin Center Blvd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78731-3101.

The WU-ATP is divided into two stages:

Preparation Stage

The student selects Athletic Training as his/her major and enrolls in general education and introductory course work. The Preparation Stage allows the student to explore the athletic training field to ensure that he/she wants to pursue the field.

Clinical Stage

Formal admission into the Clinical Stage is required. The student typically applies for formal admission during the fall semester of the sophomore year. If a student is not admitted into the Clinical Stage he/she will select a different major.
