Mentor and Host Teachers

Teachers Med

Mentor and Host Teachers are the foundation for a clinically-based program such as the one at Winthrop!  Without dedicated mentor and host teachers, it would be impossible to provide the high quality classroom experience so critical to becoming an educator. Host and mentor teachers engage in co-teaching with Winthrop teacher candidates throughout all field and internship experiences.

Host and Mentor Teacher Benefits - beyond the intrinsic motivation of supporting the next generation of teachers, host and mentor teachers receive various benefits for their service.

Information, Links, and Forms

Host Teachers support the early field experiences by providing summative assessment of teacher candidate work with P-12 students. Being a host teacher is an excellent start to becoming a mentor teacher. It requires the teacher hold a valid SC professional teaching certificate and successfully complete the ADEPT evaluation. Complete (mentor teachers DO NOT need to apply as a host teacher as well) the steps below if interested in becoming a host teacher.

  1. Communicate interest with principal who will support the faculty member moving forward with the application or advise against partipcation.
  2. Summit online host teacher application.
  3. Contact principal to complete the online recommendation form.

Mentor Teachers coach teacher candidates through the year-long internship as formative assessors.
