International Business

The Major

The International Business option includes six courses: four required business courses, an approved international culture course, and a course that combines international business and culture. Students whose first language is English are also required to take at least two courses in one modern foreign language.

The following courses are required for all International Business students.

ECON 521       International Trade and Investment

FINC 514         International Financial Management

MGMT 529      International Management

MKTG 581      Marketing for Global Competitiveness

These four courses provide a broad view of International Business and specific business skills in each of the four areas. In addition to the four required courses, each International Business student chooses one international culture course from a list that includes courses in Anthropology, French, Geography, German, History, International Media, Political Science, Religion, and Spanish. The course list can be found here.

The requirement for a course that combines international business and culture can be met by taking ONE of the following courses:

BADM 400 — International Field Experience Course. This is a Short Study Abroad course that is offered in the spring and summer. Course requirements include attending several class sessions, attending all scheduled events during the study abroad experience, and writing a paper related to business in the countries that you visited. Information about trips offered this year are listed along with all Winthrop Faculty-Led programs.

BADM 401 — Business and Study Abroad. This course is designed for Business students who participate in a Study Abroad experience that lasts at least four weeks. The objective of the course is to help you understand the relationship between business and society in the country where you study. Course requirements include business visits, research, and an analysis of how culture, politics, and economics affect business in that country. The course is completed via email, under the supervision of a Winthrop Business professor.

BADM 492 — Internship in International Business. This course combines work experience with related course requirements. The internship must be completed in a company that is engaged in international business, and it must be related to the international part of the company's business. Students have completed internships in global Finance, Marketing, and Management. Students who complete an internship in the Rock Hill/Charlotte area, or as part of a Semester Study Abroad experience, can take other courses at the same time.

As stated above, students whose first language is English are also required to take at least two courses in one modern foreign language. This requirement can be met by taking courses in French, German, Spanish, Chinese, or Italian. Winthrop offers two semesters of Chinese and Italian. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in French, German, and Spanish are offered. Minors are also offered in these languages. If English is not your first language, you can take foreign language courses, but you are not required to do so.

Winthrop accepts Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit in French, German, and Spanish. If you have studied one of these languages, but do not have AP or IB credit, you may be able to get credit for up to three courses by taking a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test. AP, IB, or CLEP credits can be used to meet the foreign language requirement.
