Message from the Chair

Hello and welcome.

Winthrop supplies a broad set of opportunities to its computing majors.  The computing coursework will prepare you for many different careers.  Evidence of the high quality of our programs is their accreditation by the top accrediting organizations.  Our faculty have won awards for teaching and research excellence, and their top priority is preparing you with the skills desired by employers.

Average class sizes of 25 mean you will know your professors, and they will know you. We work with each student to help her/him determine their individual career goals. There are many opportunities to build your resume outside of coursework. If you decide to do an internship one summer, and I strongly encourage you to do that, then we will help you in that process.  You might decide to do a research project with a professor.  You might want to join the STARS computing club, which is a service organization.  Or you might chose to join the ACM programming team and compete against other universities.

We offer three varieties of computing at Winthrop.  The BS in Computer Science degree is a technical degree that prepares graduates for a very broad range of careers in software development or information technology.  The Computer Information Systems concentration of the Business degree prepares graduates for careers in information systems divisions of large corporations.  The BS in Digital Information Design degree is all about web development, such as web site security, web marketing strategies, and effective graphic design.

If you have any questions about our programs or about professional opportunities within computing, please don't hesitate to contact me.
