Computer Science & Quantitative Methods

Message from the Chair

The department of Computer Science and Quantitative Methods provides many opportunities to its students.  All computer science classes are taught by full-time PhD faculty members that have years of experience in the field.  Average class sizes of 25 mean you will know your professors, and they will know you. We work with each student to help her/him determine their individual career goals. If you decide to do an internship one summer, and I strongly encourage you to do that, then we will help you in that process.  You might decide to do a research project with a professor.  You might want to join the STARS computing club, which is a service organization, or join the ACM programming team and compete against other universities. There are many opportunities to choose from to build your resume and get your career off to a great start.

Students in the Computer Science degree complete a core set of courses covering a wide range of topics, including programming, algorithm analysis, theoretical foundations, networking, and software engineering.  These students select elective courses, such as security or parallel programming, to design a program to meet their career objectives.  Students in the Computer Information Systems concentration of the Business degree complete the business core (accounting, finance, management, etc) plus computer science courses such as programming, database design, and software engineering.  Both majors are strongly recruited by leading employers in our region.

We are very proud that Winthrop's Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.  ABET is the premier accrediting body for engineering and technology degree programs.  The Computer Information Systems concentration of the Business degree is accredited by AACSB International, the premier business accrediting body.

If you have any questions about our programs or about professional opportunities within the computing field, please don't hesitate to contact me.
