Sept. 6 - Press Release: Community Needs Prompt New Languages Minor at Winthrop

Last semester, the department launched the first new course of the new Spanish for Law and the Helping Professions minor. Students in SPAN 205 took their Spanish skills beyond flashcards and learned how to give Miranda Rights, issue a sobriety test, and thoughtfully interact with victims of a crime. While the minor is specifically designed for students pursuing degrees in sociology, criminology, law, social work, and other professions, all students are welcome to register for the course. Aug. 20 - Welcome Class of 2022!

We are excited to welcome our newest class of Eagles! If you are not sure which language class to register for, please consider taking the Language Placement Exam or consulting with our Department Chair, Dr. Shinabargar, to find the best class for you.

Aug. 20 - Fall 2018 Language Lab Hours

This semester, we are fortunate to have our Language Learning Center offer longer hours and more resources to our language students! To see what the lab has to offer, visit the Language Learning Center page. The lab will be open starting Monday, August 27.

Mar. 7 - Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month and the Department of World Languages & Cultures is celebrating women around the world who have made a difference. Join us on Facebook and Instagram as we highlight historic women each day of the month. 

Mar. 5 - Did you see us in The Johnsonian?

The Spanish Club Tertulia was featured in a recent edition of The Johnsonian for their hard work in organizing the Spanish Film Series. We are very proud of our students' work and we hope you will join them as the wrap up the film festival on March 8

Feb. 19 - New Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunity

If you are a French minor and received a Pell Grant, you are eligible for up to $4,500 in scholarships to study abroad in Dakar, Senegal. This is a Winthrop program offered by the International Center. For more information, please review the program flyer or contact the Study Abroad Office

Feb. 1 - Spanish Film Festival

The Spanish Club Tertulia is hosting a Spanish Film Festival every Tuesday from February 6 to March 6 in Dina's Place. The films highlight the beauty of the Spanish language and the complexity of Spanish-speaking cultures. For each film attended, students can earn a Cultural Event credit.

Nov. 8 - French Major Featured in Winthrop Magazine

In the fall edition of the Winthrop Magazine, French major, Camila Brito '17 was featured for her participation in the BMX World Championships. At the championships held this past summer, Camila interned as a translator in the medical tent. Learn more about Camila and her internship experience on page 10 of the Winthrop Magazine.

Oct. 27 - Student Spotlight: Cole Heatherly

Say "bonjour" to our Student Spotlight, Cole Heatherly! Cole is a senior French major who works in the Language Learning Center and helps run the French Club. After graduation, he wants to pursue an M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration/Student Affairs.

Oct. 24 - Congratulations, Araceli!

Araceli Amezcua-Reyes '17, a senior Spanish major, received a superior rating on the Oral Proficiency Interview! The superior rating is the highest score a student can receive on the proficiency evaluation.

Aug. 15 - Bienvenido to Our New Admin!

Today was Jayme Keefer's first day as the new Administrative Specialist for the Department of World Languages and Cultures. She will be assisting the department chair with administrative duties, planning, budgeting, and marketing. Stop by her office in Kinard 220 and get to know her!
