Department Scholarships

Please read the requirements for each scholarship application carefully. A call for applications will be sent to all current and newly-admitted students in the Spring. Applications are accepted during Spring and Summer. Money is awarded during the next academic year (Fall and Spring). All applications should be submitted to the Scholarship Committee at socialwork@winthrop.edu.

Linda M. Ashley Scholarship

The Linda M. Ashley Scholarship is a competitive award made to a non-traditional student (age 30 or older) in social work.  B.S.W. and M.S.W. students are eligible to apply.  Applicants should submit a Department of Social Work Graduate Scholarship Application, a resume, and a personal statement. The one-to two page statement should address their interest in social work as a career, their journey as a non-traditional student, and their academic/professional achievements. 

Virginia W. and Elizabeth C. Mortimer Scholarship

The Mortimer Scholarship is a competitive scholarship award made to MSW students who demonstrate a career interest in either affordable housing or emergency services.  Applicants should submit a Department of Social Work Graduate Scholarship Application, a resume, and a personal statement. The one to two page statement should address their interest in a social work career in either affordable housing or emergency services, and their academic and professional achievements.

Ernestine C. Player Scholarship

The Ernestine C. Player Scholarship fund provides scholarships and/or discretionary funds to benefit M.S.W. students who demonstrate potential for academic excellence. Applicants should submit a Department of Social Work Graduate Scholarship Application, a resume, and a personal statement. The personal statement should be a one-page letter of application to the Scholarship Committee at socialwork@winthrop.edu. A call for applications will be sent to current and accepted students in Spring. 

Graduate School Scholarships

 There are several scholarships available from the Winthrop Graduate School for current and newly-admitted MSW students, including those listed below. Additional information is available at the Graduate School Page. Applications may be sumbitted to the Scholarship Committee at socialwork@winthrop.edu.

Graduate Foundation Scholarship Applications are due March 15 for Fall awards and October 15 for Spring awards.  

Elizabeth Hope Reed Fellows Scholarship Applications are due March 1.

 

Graduate Associate Positions

The Department of Social Work offers a range of Graduate Associate positions for M.S.W. students. These positions include a tuition waiver and hourly wage.

The Graduate School also lists graduate associate positions in other offices that M.S.W. students may be able to apply for.

 

Award Nominations

BSW Field Excellence Award

This award represents exemplary achievement in B.S.W. field education including excellence in the performance of field internship duties and distinction in upholding the high standards of the social work profession. Nominations should be sent in electronic format to the Awards Committee at socialwork@winthrop.edu. Nominations are accepted in February and awards are given in April of each year.

MSW Field Excellence Award

This award represents exemplary achievement in M.S.W. field education including excellence in the performance of field internship duties and distinction in upholding the high standards of the social work profession. Nominations should be sent in electronic format to the Awards Committee at socialwork@winthrop.edu. Nominations are accepted in February and awards are given in April of each year.

BSW Academic Excellence Award

This award represents exemplary academic achievement as a student in the B.S.W. Program, including superiority in academic performance, excellence as an engaged participant within the social work learning community, and distinction in upholding the high standards of the social work profession. Nominations should be sent in electronic format to the Awards Committee at socialwork@winthrop.edu. Nominations are accepted in February and awards are given in April of each year.

MSW Academic Excellence Award

This award represents exemplary academic achievement as a student in the M.S.W. Phi Alpha Honor Society

The National Social Work Honor Society, Phi Alpha, is an honor society for social work students who have achieved academic excellence.  Winthrop University is home to the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Phi Alpha.  B.S.W. students may be invited to join Phi Alpha after achieving junior status or higher, and earning a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.  MSW students may be invited to join Phi Alpha after completing 50% of MSW courses and achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher.
