Director's Message

Growing older isn't what it used to be! The demographics in the United States reflect dramatic growth in the number of older adults - many of whom are experiencing unprecedented longevity in good health and with vitality. Yet, the increasing potential for longevity is also resulting in alarming numbers of older adults who are struggling and living longer with serious illnesses, complex losses, and deepening levels of isolation and poverty.

It takes a diverse field of professionals to participate in the emotional, psychological, social, physical, and spiritual health of older adults. The likelihood that you will be working with or in other ways dealing with older adults is greater than ever before. So, whatever your career plans, consider a minor in Gerontology - it will serve you well!

Our Gerontology Minor is offered in a distinctive Winthrop manner, with an emphasis on flexibility and an eye toward preparing you for meaningful work. Besides a well-grounded theoretical foundation, the minors are exposed to direct service and administrative dimensions of gerontology.

If you would like more information about the Gerontology minor at Winthrop, contact Dr. Jonathan Marx.
