Dr. Solomon is professor of sociology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Winthrop. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from Purdue University. She has taught courses in "Social Theory," "Research Methods," "Principles of Sociology," "Marriage and Family," "Sociology of Aging," "Death and Grief as Social Processes," and "Social Problems." Her research interests include gender differences in retirement income, grandparents raising grandchildren, aging well and humor, the relationship between people and objects, and student self-presentation in the classroom.
Solomon has written several book chapters and published in refereed journals such as The Gerontologist, The Journals of Gerontology, Sex Roles, and The American Behavioral Scientist.
She has been a member of the Editorial Board for the journal Sociological Perspectives and a peer reviewer for a number of journals including The Journals of Gerontology, Journal of Applied Gerontology, Teaching Sociology, and the American Sociological Review.
Solomon maintains professional affiliations through membership in the American Sociological
Association, the Gerontological Society of America, the Southern Sociological Society,
and the Midwest Sociological Society. She also is a member of the following honor
societies: Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Omicron Delta Kappa.
She is a three-time winner of the Dinkins Student Union Support and Encouragement
Award and recipient of the Faculty Student Life Award. She has been faculty advisor
for two student organizations, supported undergraduate research as a faculty mentor,
served on the Welcome Week planning committee, and was a faculty partner for a Learning
for Life Academic Success Community.
