Dr. Sjostrom has extensive experience teaching mathematics to elementary, middle and high school students. Since earning her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, she has taught courses in mathematics content and pedagogy, with a focus on problem-solving, reasoning and sense-making. Her interests include the appropriate use of technology (such as graphing calculators and dynamic geometry software), and the use of lesson study with both professional development and methods courses. Dr. Sjostrom is currently involved in a research project investigating preservice teachers' perceptions and beliefs about problem solving as a means of learning mathematics  She is an active member of AMTE, NCTM, and SCCTM, and regularly presents at national and regional meetings.
