Dr. Bickford has taught widely in the areas of twentieth-century American literature and African American literature.  Her research interests include investigating the ways in which hegemonic discourse works to shape subjectivity and, conversely, in understanding the ways in which peoples othered by discourse on the basis of race, sex, nationality, or sexual preference resist such inscription through the creative use of language.  Her primary work in this area has read W.E.B. DuBois’ concept of double consciousness through a psychoanalytic lens to scrutinize the ways in which double consciousness leads to the practice of signifying and how this resistive rhetorical device works to complicate a Lacanian schema of individuation.  Dr. Bickford also teaches Winthrop’s Harry Potter course and has been known to geek out a conferences such as PotterWatch and DragonCon.  She is the Director of Winthrop’s Office of Nationally Competitive Awards, where she helps students find and apply for prestigious scholarships, fellowships, and awards.
