The Minor

Minor in English

The minor in English allows students in all majors to explore a wide variety of literature and authors over a broad time range. It also provides background in investigating, interpreting, and writing about literature.

For a minor in English, students must complete 18 semester hours in ENGL courses, including ENGL 203, ENGL 208, and ENGL 211 and 9 hrs in ENGL electives, which may include ENGE 519 and a maximum of 3 hours in ENGL 200. Six hours in the minor MUST be numbered above 299, and 3 hours in the minor MUST be numbered above 499.

Minor in Writing

The minor in Writing allows students in all majors to pursue their interests in the craft of written expression, whether in a creative or a professional emphasis. Please note that students in the Writing Track of English may not minor in Writing. All writing minors must complete 6 hours from the following list of courses:  WRIT 300, WRIT 250, WRIT 351, WRIT 500, WRIT 501, WRIT 502, WRIT 510 (when topic is appropriate), ENGL 530, and ENGL 507. If this requirement is not counted toward the major, students may use these 6 hours as part of the required 18 semester hours in the minor.

Minors choosing the Creative Writing emphasis choose 6-9 hours from WRIT 307, 316, 507, 511, 516, or 530; and 9-12 hours from WRIT 300, 350, 351, 500, 501, 502, ENGL 310, 317, 320, 321, 325, 328, ENGL 501, 504, 507, 510 (if topic is appropriate; dept. chair permission required), 520, 530, 550 (if topic is appropriate; dept. chair permission required), or ENGE 519.

Minors choosing the Professional Writing emphasis choose  12-18 hours from WRIT 351, 366, 367, 465, 501, 502, 510 (if topic is appropriate; dept. chair permission required), 511 (if topic is appropriate; dept. chair permission required), ENGL 550 (if topic is appropriate; dept. chair permission is required), MCOM 226, 241, 260, 302, 341, 370, BADM 180, 411, MGMT 355, IMCO 105, or VCOM 261.

*If on an appropriate topic; consult your advisor or the Chair for procedures to get Topics courses to count in DegreeWorks.
