Pre-University Arts Program July 6-20, 2019


Pre-University Header

Earn three university credits and gain valuable experience in dance, theatre, music, design and studio arts, training with professional college faculty members, this summer at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The program is an intensive, residential 2-week experience that includes instruction, housing, food, and access to the recreation center.

Course Intensives & Workshops

Course intensives and workshops will be taught by Winthrop University professors, who are all professional practiving artists and designers, giving you a true college classroom and studio experience. Choose from: Acting for Theatre, Musical Dance Theatre, Modern Dance, Music: Band and Orchestra, Music: Voice Instruction, Music Technology, Piano, Creative Coding, Graphic Design, Illustration, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Ceramics, Photography, Art History.

During the two-week program, you will also be enrolled in Arts Lab, working creatively and collaboratively with other students across the disciplines in the production and performance of interdisciplinary arts events.

Additional academic activities may include gallery talks, music/dance/theatre performances, film screenings, visits by professional artists and designers, and portfolio preparation.

Application Process & Requirements

Applicants should currently be enrolled in 10th, 11th or 12th grade in high school (who will be rising juniors, seniors, or graduates in the summer of 2019). A complete Pre-University application form, $50 non-refundable application fee, and a 250-word personal essay about your reasons for wanting to attend are required. A letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor is recommended, but not required for admission. We do not require a portfolio or audition for attending Pre-University.

Note: all attendees will be required to provide proof of their own medical coverage.

*Apply by March 1 to reduce the cost of attendance by $400!

Accomodations, Snacks, & Meals

Living away from home and experiencing the independence and responsibility of college life is an exhilarating time, and an important aspect of the Pre-University program. Winthrop cares about all aspects of your well-being. You'll be living in an air-conditioned residence hall with other Pre-University students in rooms separated by gender. All students are expected to live on campus for the entire program. Current Winthrop students will be on campus with you as resident assistants and mentors to provide help and encouragement.

Eat well in the Thomson Dining Hall. Meals will consist of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are vegetarian and gluten-free options, and special dietary accommodations are made upon request. Coffee, snacks, and personal items are available for purchase at the DiGiorgio Campus Center. Want to work out? Swim? Run? You'll have access to our recreation center during your time here.
