Liberty Tree buttonIn Fall 2009, the West Forum and the Winthrop University Department of Mass Communication received a grant from the Liberty Tree Initiative. The Liberty Tree Initiative is sponsored by the McCormick Foundation and the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Winthrop University was one of just eight institutions nationwide to be awarded this grant in its first year.

The West Forum hosted a series of events focusing on the First Amendment in fall 2009. Topics included press freedom, religious freedom, the uses of the First Amendment by Civil Rights activists, and freedom of speech and expression. The West Forum sponsored several events in fall 2009:

1 Amendment for All

 Winthrop University Receives Liberty Tree Renewal Grant in 2011  

In Spring 2011, Winthrop University became one of only two institutions in the country to receive a second grant from the Liberty Tree Initiative, to sponsor additional programming on the First Amendment. The focus of the Spring 2011 Liberty Tree Series was Free Expression, especially in the context of the performing arts.
