Charlotte 2012 button2012 Democratic National Convention

Where: Charlotte, North Carolina

Under the aegis of the John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy, Winthrop University has a variety of activities planned related to the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

 

 

These activities include:

  • Charlotte Consortium
    Winthrop University is participating in a consortium of Charlotte-area colleges and universities who will organize and host programs related to the Democratic Convention from January - July, 2012. The West Forum will take students to events hosted by other participating schools.

  • Learn, Experience American Democracy (LEAD)
    The West Forum is coordinating LEAD, a weekend of convention-related activities for 15 South Carolina Colleges and Universities. Students and faculty from around the state will visit Charlotte and Rock Hill from September 1-3, 2012 and engage in a variety of convention activities.

    • LEAD registration forms are now available. Registration deadline is July 31, 2012.

      • Forms for those institutions whose participants require housing 
      • Forms for institutions located in Rock Hill whose participants do not require housing (York Technical College and Clinton Junior College).

Participation in LEAD is restricted to students and faculty at the 15 institutions already committed. Additional institutions or individuals may be accommodated on a first come, first served basis. Contact Katarina Moyon, Assistant Director of the West Forum.

  • Special Topics Course
    The Political Science department is developing a course for Fall 2012, PLSC 390, Presidential Nominating Conventions. This course will begin on August 1, 2012, and the course will include traditional classroom, on-line, and experiential instructional techniques. Undergraduate students from all Charlotte area constorium institutions and all South Carolina colleges or universities are welcome to take this course. Graduate students will be accommodated on a case by case basis.

  • Internships
    Staff members in the Center for Career & Civic Engagement are coordinating internships with the Charlotte 2012 Host Committee and the Democratic Convention Planning Committee. Internships are available in a wide range of major programs; students may be eligible for academic credit.

Recognition

Congratulations to Winthrop students Helen Layton and Summersby Okey who were awarded internships with the Democratic National Campaign Committee for Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 respectively.

The John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy congratulates Gregory Schauble, Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts, for being named a finalist in the 2012 Democratic National Convention Poster contest.
