Sculpture
Prehistory begins with sculpture. Carvings 50,000 years old exist, and nearly every age following is represented by sculpture. Today the broad variety of materials and methods help keep sculpture fresh and lively. Sculpture manifests itself not only in visually-important forms but functional ones as well. Form exists in every aspect of human life and the study of it can be both vital and consuming.

Sculpture is a growing area of the department. The studio facility is spacious and features a well-equipped woodshop, welding area, ground-floor access to an outdoor workspace and a general studio area for work in clay, concrete, plastics, stone and mixed media. The direction of emphasis ranges from traditional to cutting-edge. The student is encouraged to develop in a way appropriate to his own specific needs but is also expected to become familiar with the wide range of options open to the sculptor today. Books, magazines, slides and videotapes are available in the sculpture studio. Our students have done well in competitions — most recently as Best of Show in a national student welding competition. Pursuit of exhibition opportunities are encouraged, as are ties with professional sculpture organizations.
